Amish Peace – by Suzanne Woods Fisher

Amish PeaceI have been interested in the Amish people ever since I heard of them for the first time, many years ago. It is amazing that a group of people can live side by side with modern society and still keep their own traditions like they do. Not only do they manage to retain their traditions, and keep from adding many of the things the rest of us consider to be normal parts of everyday life; their numbers grow!  The Amish population has more than tripled since 1950 and they still live, mainly, the way they always have. When I found this book: Amish Peace, by Susanne Woods Fisher, I knew I had to read it and I’m glad I did.

About the Author

Suzanne Woods Fisher is an award-winning author who writes about real people living in faith-based communities. She has written more than 25 books; children’s books, novels and non-fiction books like this one. She is also very involved in Guide Dogs for the Blind, and has been raising puppies for this cause for more than fifteen years.

About the book

Amish Peace is an amazing and thought provoking book. Without too much drama and just telling things like they are; the author is telling a story of a group of people who live in peace with what happens and who take things in a stride. They put their faith in a higher power and by doing that they feel safe and know that they are loved and taken care of. They find solace in God no matter what happens to them, and trust that God will take care of them.

The book is made up of short depictions of specific events that exemplify how the Amish react when faced with misfortune, accidents, death, aggression and other things. The stories end with some questions on how the reader might react or how the ways of the Amish might be considered in the life of the reader.

Many things that are a part of Amish life would most certainly be beneficial for the rest of humanity, especially their way of showing forgiveness even for horrible acts of violence and the way they reach out to people in grief.

All in all,  Amish Peace is  an easy book to read, it offers interesting information about an interesting group of people and it offers some really good ideas for a more peaceful life.

My thoughts

This is a book I really recommend if you want to know a little more about a fascinating group of people. The peacefulness, acceptance and care they show for their own and also for those around them is impressive and I think we could all use some of that in our daily lives.
