One of the best ways to become calmer and more at peace with life is to do everyday mindfulness exercises. To be mindful of what you are doing and what is going on around you without thinking of the past or planning the future. It is not that easy, since we have a strong tendency to run off in our minds and either mull over things that have happened or what this or that person said or did. If we don’t do that we begin to plan what we will cook for dinner tomorrow or how we are going to be able to get things ready for the family picnic or something like that. Then when we are at the family picnic we really aren’t there either because then we are planning something else.
Mindfulness helps your health
Practicing mindfulness can reduce our stress levels and make us a lot healthier. The blood pressure goes down and we feel calmer and actually more alive than when we just go through the motions on autopilot.
Mindfulness also makes us stronger and more resilient to stressful situations like loss or problems at work, because by being mindful we allow the mind to rest and recuperate. We also give our mind time to work in the background on how to solve our problems, because when we don’t interfere; the subconscious mind is constantly problem solving.
How to be mindful
It is a very easy process, but as all easy processes it can be a bit tricky because of the agility of our minds. All you have to do is think of what you are doing!
Now that of course sounds almost ridiculously easy, but it isn’t. I dare you to be able to keep your mind solely on what you are doing for five minutes in a row, if you are not used to it! It takes a whole lot of practice before you can get to five minutes, let alone half an hour, but it is worth it when you notice how much better you feel and how the stress levels go down.
When you do this practice it gets easier if you notice and think of every little thing you are doing and feeling. You can talk to yourself and say things like: now I’m peeling a potato, the vegetable peeler feels cold in my hand, the color of the potato is creamy yellow when the peels come off, now I’m putting the potato in the pot with all the others and adding water. Now I’m putting the pot on the stove, and so on.
I know it sounds silly, but it is a way of being very present in the moment and not only do things without thinking. It also makes the most mundane things more enjoyable for some strange reason. It is like you notice your own life for the first time, and that is really a beautiful thing, don’t you think?
