What is an abundant life?

We all want to live our lives in abundance, being able to do what we want when we want to.  So what is an abundant life? Is it having all the money you want or is it just being able to eat every day and have a roof over your head?  Would having all the money you want really make you happier?  Would it not take the fun out of longing for something and working hard to get it?   After all, if you do not have to work and long for things, you miss out on the fun of picturing in your mind how you can get what you want and fantasizing about when you will get it.  I think that part is almost just as fun as actually getting the things I want!

To me abundance, and scarcity for that matter, is a mindset.  I used to think I had so little, no money, no house of my own, an old jalopy and so on.  That way of seing my life did nothing for my happiness, it only made me feel depressed and unhappy.  When I realised what I was doing to myself I started to work hard on changing my mindset. I began to view my life and the things I have in a different light, and with that came a feeling of abundance!  I really have everything I need and more!

The strange thing about changing your mindset from scarcity to abundance is that when you feel abundant you don’t need that many things anymore!  It is a lot more fun to just give away the things you no longer need or use and only keep what you really love and cherish.   All those things you have saved for a rainy day are easy to get rid of and the thought that someone else might have use for them can be a lot more rewarding than keeping your cabinets stuffed with things you never use.

When you look att what you have from the mindset of scarcity, the things you have are no good.  They are ugly and they are not of the quality you like and of course you do not have enough of them.  With this mindset everything will get worse and worse and you will never have enough!  This is because how you look at things changes the way you see them.  If you look at the things you have with fondness and gratitude, they will look a lot better and you will feel a lot better about them.

We have all met them, the people who scrimp and save, every penny they make goes in the bank and they never enjoy themselves.  Those people are in the mindset of poverty even when they have millions in the bank, and that is so scary.  All they ever see is; not enough, not enough!  By changing our mindsets we can feel abundant even when our bank accounts are empty.

Research has actually shown that people who win millions on lotteries either go bankrupt in quite a short time or do not change the way they live very much.  That means, to me, that having all that money really does not mean much if you don’t have the abundance mindset.  Even if you have all the money in the world, you can only drive one car at a time, live in one house at a time, walk in one pair of shoes at a time, so you really don’t need so much stuff!

If you are reading this, it means you have access to a computer of some sort, that is abundance!  If you can read, write, see, talk, hear, is also abundance.  Having food, shelter, clothes, shoes, is abundance. Being able to turn on the lights when it gets dark, take a shower, heat your food on a stove, sleep in a warm bed, read a book, talk to your loved ones, is abundance.

When you really start thinking about it, most often we yearn for the latest gadget, more money, a new car, a bigger house, because we think that if we could only get those things we would be happy.  So what we really want is to be happy!  The things and the money will not stay and they will get old and we will get tired of them, but learning to be happy without all that is true abundance, so why not start to feel abundance right away?

  1. This post reminds me of a quote I recently heard:

“The hardest thing to find in life is happiness – money is only hard to find because it gets wasted trying to find happiness”

It’s all about enjoying life in the moment. Love the post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂

  2. Hi Kristina,

This was just what I needed to read this morning, so thank you so much for sharing your insights on abundance and the quest for happiness! I have found myself guilty of that poverty mindset (scrimping and saving, unable to enjoy myself), even as I have sufficient income and don’t actually have to worry. It is a very bad habit that stems from my childhood, when we were actually quite poor.

Thank you for reminding me of all the abundance that I already have – my home, my clothes, my food, etc. I strive to be content and happy with what I have, because I know that ultimately having the latest and newest and nicest things won’t make me happy. Being mindfully aware of the blessings that are already in my life – those will make me happy when I am mindful of them.

Beautiful post, and perfectly timed. Thanks again 🙂

    1. Thank you Angie! I love that you liked it and that it came at the right moment for you. I have seen some extreme examples of the poverty mindset and it is so sad. I’m not always able to stay out of it myself, but I do my best! Love, Kristina
